That's certainly part of it...they don't feel the need to engage in the formal rhetoric that even James T. Kirk pulls up for conversation. But I also think that they realize that the humans are, in effect, fodder. They speak to them pretty much the way I speak to the crickets we keep to feed our chameleon and frog.

While it's likely they'd never met humans before coming to this reality, they obviously had read about them...so, I don't think they would consider them "animals".
