... was going on in the "Lorentz System" at the time of Nero's attack on Vulcan? They referred to it several times that the bulk of Starfleet was out of range in this system, which is why they had to emergency launch from Earth the reaminder of the fleet.. their "second string players" as it were... (along with the "E" which hadn't offically been launched yet) to mount what they initally thought to be a rescue mission. Later, Spock wants to join up with the rest of the fleet at the "Lorentz System."
Any "trek history" to suggest what might have been going on there?

This wasn't explained at all in the movie.
What were they gathering for? It seemed they were gathering for the sake of the Narado...but I don't know.

First, although I could be wrong about this but I believe they called it the Laurentian System. This may be in reference to the Laurentian Abyss, a trench off the eastern coast of Canada which is one of the deepest points on Earth. If so it was probably named this to imply that this System is very far away from the Federation Core. As to your question I have no idea but you have to wonder what situation, threat, event or problem would be serious enough to warrant sending the "bulk" of the "primary fleet" that far away.

As far as I remember the Lorentz system, or whatever it was called, was only mentioned as a new version of the old Only-Ship-In-Range-Argument. Four ships full of cadetts because the fleet is occupied somewhere else. It didnt mean more then Robaus remark that the Kelvin is far off and there would be no help out here. Or like the fact that phones never work when Jason is in town.

Yet, if this system is "oh-so-far-away"... why would they join up there? Wouldn't they try to meet somewhere midway? Or else all be speeding as fast as their little warp drives could carry them, to Earth?
