I know everything in the new movie is actually an alternative universe, but I have one quick question. Why would George Kirk have his wife, especially about to have a baby, on board a warship in deep space? I always thought that families living on Federation ships were not allowed until the NG era.
Any thoughts? |

Kelvin's meant to be an exploratory ship, not a warship - despite having "advanced weaponry" for its time. While it never comes up in the film, or anywhere else, it's conceivable that there were some colonists on board too. As for Mrs Kirk - like ImperaME says, she could easily be a Starfleet officer. There's no 'regulation' against getting pregnant, after all.

Orci and Kurtzman stated that she is a Starfleet officer, which is why she is off-world later, leaving young Jim Kirk behind with his Uncle.

As was said the Kelvin is a science/exploration vessel. I could imagine that there would be crew onboard who are there for other reasons than to run the ship, i.e. perform science experiments. Really didnt suprise me that Kirk's wife was on board.
Plus, im sure she just happened to have got pregnant and didnt plan on having the baby onboard (or rather in a battle), these things happen folks! |
