Well, this might be stretching it a bit, but....

When Kirk is making a mockery of Kobyashi Maru test, he pulls out an apple and eats it. In the Wrath of Khan, when he's underground with Carol and the others, Savvik (?) asks how he bested the test.... and Kirk is chomping on an apple as he explains.

I didn't like the apple scene though. It was kinda ridiculous, and to arrogant, even for Kirk

Fair point, though this is 'cocky and youthful' Kirk, who's presumably gonna mature and mellow into the man we know.

After all, Picard got into bar fights with Nausicaans when he was a cadet - a far cry from the diplomat, poet and warrior he became later.

Like I said, it's when the Vulcan kids are in their "study pits", watch for a humpback whale holograph.

Definitely a nod to ST2. Good one. Not a subtle one though, that one was in our face!

I keep thinking about the scene when Spock beams down to Vulcan: our view of him is from slightly below, and he's crouching while looking ahead and up. For some reason, it seems familiar. Was there a similar scene in one of the original shows? Anybody recall?

I don't know - but from the very first appearance of it in the trailer it was one of those shots that looked completely TOS in a way I don't know how to explain.

good point...by the way, does anybody know why spock was crouching when he first stepped onto the teleporter? I thought that was pretty odd of him to do. Almost looked like he was cowarding down.

The thing that struck me about the "study pit" sequence: I guess Vulcans practice english while also doing mathmatics... (all of the equasions were written in Western symbology.)

Aside from it being a "pit", Spock was doing this at the beginning of ST4, another nod!
