When you think about it, humanity really lucked out with its first contact, huh?

We REALLY lucked out, we can mate with them AND they don't want to enslave or eraticate us!

But even with that factored in, there's more genetic similarity between a human and a pangolin than a human and a Vulcan. Hell, we'd likely have more DNA in common with trees than with humanoid beings from another world...

Double-whammy! You're right, though. Humanity was lucky it didn't make its first contact with the Romulans, or Cardassians, or Jem'Hadar, or Borg... or even worse, the Ferengi.

You answered your own question with the phrase "die-hard".
The realization that Elizadolots is correct would send "die-hards" into disillusionment comas.

Seems that this question is over 40 years too late. It was back in the 60's that Spock had mixed heritage.

its probably an analogy or something for inter-racial marriage and mixed heritage children. That feeling that they are not truly one nor the other and rejected to a greater or lesser degree by their respective lineages...white and black, black and asian, asian and white etc etc A lot of sci fi is a metaphor or analogy for real life.
