I never thought Kirk's death was meaningless. He helped save an entire planet with a species incapable of defending itself. I can't remember how many people lived on the planet, but it was in the millions, I think.

Yes, it was easily avoidable. When I first saw generations I thought "why didn't Picard just exit the Nexus at the point in time when Soran is brought on board the 1701-D, but PRIOR to him taking Geordi?" If Picard had done that he could have placed Soran in the brig, and given up all the details of the weapons lab. Easy. I guess that isn't dramatic enough

That doesn't preclude the possibility of Spock being sent on an official ambassadorial mission to Romulus before Kirk dies on the Enterprise-B in Generations.

Anyway, this was a Spock centred movie, and having Shatner in at the end, or doing the voice over when he had no other role in the movie would have been way too corny.

I think the point NCC was making is that Kirk couldn't have known about Spock traveling to Romulus prior to his own "death" on the 1701-B. If that was the case then the news of Spock on Romulas in "unification" would have been rather old.
