I very likely left one out. Does he beat HIMSELF up at any point, ala Fight Club? If so, somebody else probably had to save him.
This is "The Future Begins", pal. He had to learn how to fight somewhere. Since you learn best by experience, well...he has some now.

Just kidding, I can do without the drop kick, but really, he could have taken out ANY Romulan with it!!
I was disappointed there wasn't any of the TOS fight music.

Kirk parachuted out of orbit to land heavily on a metal floor and then he held his own, (unarmed) against two Romulans (a species who are far stronger than humans). He also put up a very convincing performance against four highly trained guys, being defeated only by them ganging up on him. He killed about a dozen Romulans with his phaser. Not quite sure how tough you would have wanted him to be. Put it this way, I don't think he would have had too much trouble with one Gorn moving in slow motion.

I actually thought this new version of Kirk was pretty rough and tumble. He was tough enough for my liking.

If I were in his position, I know I'd be curled up on the floor crying like a little baby.

He had some good moves in the bar fight, making the two guys punch eachother for one.

How about let him win just one fight, instead of being a punching bag against odds that he's beaten several times in TOS? Gorn, Klingon, Romulan, Vulcan, Andorian, multiple opponents, armed vs. unarmed...think I'm being too picky?

He's supposed to be a hero, but in this movie he is beaten down physically and verbally. It doesn't wash.

Watch TOS again, I can't remember episodes, but he/SHATNER fought, lost and was captured several times.

The fights PINE/KIRK fought, he walked into, and away from. Now as Captain he will probably look at this recent past and work on the ONE area that we all know will be KIRK. But he can't win them all, then we have no story.

Besides, I think we needed to see him vulnerable at this stage, He even wanted to have Prime come back to explain things, but was taught he had to work it out himself.

My thoughts.

Good points.

I guess it was to show Kirk as a bit of a reckless person -- getting himself into fights, etc.

Spock was always stronger than Kirk. Kirk holds his own against Kruge in Trek III, but even that wasn't very easy. It took his right boot to put him away.
