I have to agree with you here Patrick, but at the same time that makes me wonder just how long those non-fans will stick around once the glitter and newness wares off?

I can just hear it now, "Ohh Yeah you gotta go see that new trek flick, it was great and awesome and it had so much action....". Next week we hear "Heya, when does that new Terminator movie come out, I here the guy that played Batman is playing John Conner, he did such a great job doing the Batman I can't wait to see him as Conner".

You see I am the one left with a Star Trek that most fans this week won't give a dang about once the newest flick hits the screen. So I do have a larger interest into how anything Star Trek is depicted on the big screen or on TV, you see I will still be there like I have for decades, thru the storm!

For that, we await the next movie.

As long as the chracters are written freshly, yet genuinely...I think we're in for some really great Trek movies ahead.

indeed... I mean there was what, nearly 10 years there with nothing Trek related between TOS's 3rd and final season and the ST: TMP? And then after that there were only 3 or 4 movies made before TNG hit the scene. Now since then there have been multiple movies and series overlapping one another for the past 20+ years.

I loved the first Transformers movie, and my wife and I have both been eagerly awaiting the 2nd one coming out next month, and no doubt a 3rd one. With a name like "Revenge of *bad guys* you know there will be a 3rd one.

So yeah I think/hope there will be new fans who loved this one and will eagerly await the next one, just as many of us long-time fans will.

I am getting tired of fans talking about 'canon' or history.

Listen, after TMP, execs at Paramount removed Gene Roddenberry (Trek CREATOR) from direct involvement for ST II. TMP, while a financial success, was a disapointment. It was bloated and the budget went overboard.

So for ST II we have a new team of writers and a director trying to reinvigorate Trek for what was at the time of 1982 (when the Star Wars films and Indiana Jones were dominating theatres with special effects and swashbucking heroics).

Everyone wanted to see Trek amped up -- and that's what we got -- TWOK. Roddenberry even disliked the new uniforms but had no say (other than being an 'executive consultant').

So if Gene had little say over the movies of II to VI but its still considered canon?? What about the rediculous idea of Spock having a half-brother (Sybok)?? But no, that's still canon -- but it was fricken rediculous!

Its time for fans to really 'get a life' as Shat once said and enjoy this latest movie for what it is: a Star Trek FILM.

A perfectly valid concern.

But at this juncture - we again can but wait and see what the fallout from this film is.

Or we could all start to work for Priceline!

You are right Kevin, that's all any of us can do. Hope for the best and a second movie that is just as great with all the action and adventure that this one had, any maybe for myself, a little compromise to make us canon trekkies happier and still keep the new faces interested.

With all the complaining about maintaining canon or not from both side I don't think we are far from a happy medium that we would all accpet as some would think!

I think the writers failed in a lot of ways, but also succeeded in a lot. They have done what was needed to potentially enlarge the fan base, and in doing so they went quite far out there.

For the second, I think they need to reign that in and get back to the existing fans to work on something that better works for all.
