I think we Germanic Hun types just throw them out the door at 16 and yell, "Good luck!" Nah, who am I kidding - he's my only kid; I'll be doing his laundry until his wife takes over.

i ve heard only that american families dismiss their children after 18,its wrong by me if true, now i am not suggesting to remain and be catered inside your parents house until 40,but hell, who is gonna take care mother and father when their old and week, they ll need support.i am away from my parents, but my old house and room are always open for me,they give unconditionaly love , this is parenthood ,and of course when its time i am gonna take care them

You're right in that Americans are very different from other cultures re. throwing the kids out the door. I don't know if it's part of our "rugged individuality" hangup, or what. I think we can be kind of self-centered, and that leads to a weakened family unit.
There was an article in the NY Times a while back discussing how nursing homes are unheard of in the Islamic world, because families took care of each other. Over here, we just dump Grandma and Grandpa into nursing homes and let them die. I assure you I won't do that to my parents!

I used to volunteer in a nursing home and it was just so damned depressing to see those poor old souls just sitting there lonely that I had to stop volunteering. Shallow of me, I know, but it was so freaking sad I couldn't handle it.

Seriously? For some reason that makes me happy! When you think about it, we Americans have started warehouseing our children at daycares and our elderly in nursing homes, and for what? $$$. Sure, some people have to work, and I totally understand that. My husband and I decided we would sacrifice some $$ in order for me to be home all day and work a few nights a week. Sure, I'm not driving a BMW, but I got to raise my son instead of shipping him out to a stranger. In the long run, I'd rather have that than all the BMWs in the world.
At some point in time, capitalism made us love money more than we love other people.
