Hey guys, loved the movie! My question--the little "brain-controlling" insects, aren't those the insects that were invading the Federation in the TNG episode "Conspiracy? The do the EXACT same thing, and looked pretty much the same! Your thoughts?

![]() Another TNG reference. Chekov refers to Kirk, Sulu, and expendable redshirt doing the parajump to the Romulan planet drill as an "away team".

Did they only start calling it an "Away team" in TNG?

Yes. In TOS (even the films) it was a 'landing party.'

Correctomundo.
![]() However, here's an interesting side note... If you've ever watched the movie "Boondock Saints" (awesome and funny action movie, btw), there's a scene where the Russian mafia enters an Irish pub where St. Patty's day is being celebrated. He introduces himself in a very rough Russian accent: "I am Ivan Chekov......" One of the brothers in the movie says: "Chekov? Well, I'm McCoy, this is Kirk. Throw in Scotty or Spock and we'll have an away team." ![]()

Landing Party/Away Team - I could care less.
Bu who knows about the insects - it/ceti alpha eel/Conspiracy parastites all look kind of similar. All make anyone infected subject to either suggestion or in the case of TNG, direct control of the host by the parasite. It could be like Earth's insect life - lots of variations in Spiders/Ants etc, in deep space lots of variations of little critters that like to crawl insie you!

Similar morphology and similar region of interest (brainstem).

Nero refers to them as "centurion slugs". That would suggest that they are indigenous to Romulus or to some planet within the Romulan Empire. In "Conspiracy", Picard refers at the end of the episode to a transmission from the infected commander at Starfleet to some destination deep in uncharted space. I'm not sure the creatures are the same - but the scene sure reminded me of "Wrath of Khan".

Maybe it was a larval Goa'uld.
