what storyline do you really want in Trek XII not the horta or anything that they encountered in the original series.

The problem with a new species as an enemy is you're going to have to dwell on the time travel/alternate universe theme all over again in order to explain why in the heck they never showed up in the original timeline.

My vote is for taking an alien race that for one reason or another appeared and then quickly disappeared in TOS (Tholians maybe), and escalate them to a major threat. You wouldn't necessarily have to rehash the "it's an alternate universe" discussion, it would just be sort of understood.

The Tholians seemed to have had the capability to pose a serious threat, so did the Gorn.

Hmm maybe a story of where Klingons get the blame for a series of attacks that were really caused by aliens that want the Federation and the Klingons ar war, so they can rule whatever is left.
