To be utterly technical, his specific order from Pike was to open his chute at the "last possible second" since they only had one shot at it.

Sulu opened first, at a higher altitude than Kirk.

Olson just didn't compensate for the wind sucking him over the side.

When Kirk rescues Pike and Pike shoots the Romulan that was coming towards them - where did he get the weapon?

It looks like he gets it from under the mattress/bedding he was laying on.

It isn't the phaser, because this weapon he used has a much longer barrel on it.

Isn't it the weapon Kirk laid down to release Pike from the table? That's what I thought.

If I remember right Kirk shoots one Romulan and goes right to Pike. Doesn't pick up the Romulan's weapon at all. Starts to release Pike when the other Romulan comes up. Pike reaches down by the side of the bedding and pulls out a long barreled weapon and shoots around Kirk at the Romulan.

What side does Kirk set his weapon down? I thought he reached over next to Kirk from where Kirk had set it down, but that part was a little obscured by Kirk himself. I didn't see him reach down the side of anything.

Maybe I'll catch it better next time I see it.
