for me this film is about the characters, how they grow and relate to one another as well as the audience, us, being able to relate to them; the entire storyline, science and technology in this film is secondary.

I have to agree with StarTrekXIfan. The movie is meant for entertainment! And, yes, they strayed from the original script, but seriously, had you heard that all they did was remake TOS into a movie and used a new crew, would you have gone?? You would have sat back and said, "How lame, they remade the same old stuff." I think the movie was really well done and the change of the timeline was rather inventive because that now gives them carte blanche to make new movies and not have to adhere to the TOS, TNG or anything else. They are free to be creative and change some of the story lines and character developments.

The movie is what ever you want it to be. Soap Opra, or Science convention.
It's what you get out it that is important.

yeah you're right, I just got angry that some of these reviews appear to have no soul, I understand we all have different perspectives and I do respect other peoples opinions I just got a bit defencive, because this film works for me on the level that I analysed it and watched it. I would like to go back and see it a second time to see if I get that feeling again.

Yup. And someday, maybe GLBT folk will be able to have the same sort of inspiration from Star Trek instead of being completely ignored.

Thumbs up Set phasers to BODACIOUS

I just saw the movie. I was left breathless.

The hype was right. This is not the Star Trek we knew, at least, not what Star Trek had become. Recent iterations had become stale and boring, full of technobabble and recycled plots and situations. This movie, however, ditches all the stagnancy, and brings it back to its TOS roots with a shiny new modern finish. This Trek movie was all about the clash of good vs evil, characters, and classic-Trek campiness and fun, and I like, nay... LOVE it that way.

I've been in love with the new Enterprise, the "Sexyprise" as I call her, ever since I saw the first picture. Finally seeing her in motion was like a dream come true. Absolutely NO offense to the awesome and talented guy, but Tobias Richter's rendition falls short in comparison to just how majestic and plain kickass this ship looks when it moves in the movie. My birthday is next week, and I'm gonna drill it into my sisters' heads that they can and should get me the Playmates model so I can spend hours at a time just staring at it.

The characters were great. All of them brought new life to the classic characters. They did it in their own way, but they were still true to their personalities. Standouts were Leonard Nimoy as "Spock Prime," of course, and Karl Urban and Simon Pegg as McCoy and Scotty were especially praiseworthy as well. If you ask me, the latter didn't get NEARLY enough screentime. The only one that could have been better was Ms. Saldana as Uhura. Her acting was magnificent, but the character of Uhura in the film was a little too... cliched, I'd say. Her role as love interest to Spock, of all people, felt tacked-on and unnecessary. But that is literally my ONLY beef with the film, and an extremely minor one at that.

My verdict is a screaming A+. Well done, Mr. Abrams. Needless to say that if you have NOT yet seen the film... Go. Now.

Tee Hee. I do have a sense of houmour but you only have to see my action figure collection to get an idea about my interpersonal skills!

The film has a lot that is commendable in it and the in-jokes were well done. They had to tie all the characters together (except Rand - grrr) and so the plot was going to be a bit contrived. Still, have you never read the nitpickers guides? Trek is full of these errors! It's hilarious!

If I have two serious criticisms they would be that I dislike them advancing the technology beyond TOS too much. I don't want to see Voyager level solutions to TOS era problems. They need to keep a lid on the technology and focus on character ingenuity - that's why I shuddered at transporting over such a long distance.

The second one is the subconscious sexism. It really winds me up because it is so unnecessary and so few people seem to notice it. It's an insult to the concept of equality in the 23rd century.

It's one thing to refute or disagree with a review, it's another to say "I disagree therefore the reviewer has no heart, humor, and has bad interpersonal skills."

Several pages back my 4 part review said much of the same as this poster did. I don't say, "People who disagree with me don't think things through and are shallow." They see it differently. Not worse, just differently.
