But atmospherically, like e.g. in FC, nothing about a bright future and the peaceful nature of the UFP.
At the end they even did not care about taking prisoneres and just blow up the Narada, which were justified given the grave danger of Nero and his henchmen and the difficulty of capturing them on the Narada to take them prisoners ... if everything before would not suggest that this future is like our present. Second time we see Starfleet officers or rather cadets, they beat up ONE farm boy in a bar ... no wonder non-Trekkers believe that this is "Trek Wars".
I even don't see the destruction of the Narada as a big problem. Actually i even liked that scene and how Kirk reacts at first. Of course Nero wouldn't give up and still had enough destructive potential to be a danger for the Enterprise.

The impression of "Trek Wars" is rather implied by the non-stop action. To count the scenes nobody is either fighting or committing any other kind of active action you only need one hand.

Default Spoilers

Musings in no particular order:

The Kelvin and Enterprise did not, in fact, have a good reason for looking the way they did. Nero appeared after the Kelvin was already built, blew up the Kelvin and then disappeared for 25 years. His interference couldn't have affected the Kelvin's design and didn't make enough of an impact to affect the Enterprise's. George Kirk was a plot device more than a character. What happened to Kirk's mother? Did she go to the Throwaway Characters' Home after leaving him with Drunken Uncle? Nero's motivation is a huge leap -- blaming Spock for Romulus being destroyed by a supernova seems a little like swearing mortal vengeance on the maintenance guy if your apartment collapses in an earthquake. McCoy was all right except for his speech about disease in space, which makes you wonder why the hell he'd sign on to be a doctor on a starship. The bar fight was sort of unremarkable except for Pike's dialogue, which comes off as a speech despite Greenwood's valiant effort to make it sound natural. No reason for the coincidental presence of a Starfleet shipyard in Iowa. I guess all the places we build ships now got converted to iPod factories, and building the things in space wouldn't allow for cynical and rebellious youths to ride up to them on motorcycles and pose for poignant closeups. Vulcans are racists now, which explains why, with hundreds of light years separating the two planets, they're our best buddies in the galaxy. The romance between Spock and Uhura was a nice nod to the fans (we saw just a hint of that kind of history between the two in TOS on a couple of occasions) but the public display of affection in the transporter room was not only wildly out of character for Spock but wildly unprofessional on Uhura's part. Orion animal women have gone from dangerously manipulative and sexually insatiable animal women to horny but exceedingly rational and modest coeds. And apparently Uhura has superhuman hearing. I wonder if her eyes turned completely white when she did that like happens to other X-Men. Maybe she's related to Storm. More later.

Saint, I hope you enjoyed it, even only for its entertainment value.

I think any threads that are individual reviews are being assimilated into the collective!

So just out of curiousity, what was your overall verdict on a grade of A to F?
