Default That New Car Smell

What instrument is this? First it sounds like a violin or cello, but then... does anyone know what it is?
You can find the track on the movie website.

I don't know, but it was used heavily in both Firefly and Battlestar Galactica's music.

I hope that new car won't need air fresheners.

The instrument used is called an Erhu, or a "Chinese Violin."

I figured it'd be an Indian or Chinese instrument. Sounds great, anyway - that's one of my favourite track excerpts from the main site.

It's track 13, but I'm hoping that the track numbers don't match the sequence of events in the film. Because I'm really hoping "That New Car Smell" will be the music to accompany our first, Motion Picture-style fly-by of the new Enterprise in orbit. The track name, and the rather hauntingly beautiful music, make me think it'd be ideally suited for just that scene.

Overall, I'm liking the new soundtrack a lot. Perfect blend of the old and new, with some great international flavours as well.

The instrument is a Chinese traditional string instrument called an Erhu.

I think it's meant to represent Spock and Vulcan, and it's very evocative, IMHO.
