Wow, I'm glad to have made some critics happier about the push back... as I said, the significance of this specific date makes me happy as well - I accepted the delay when I realised the connection.

Well whatever the true reason or reasons behind movie the release date back, it just gives us more time to complain and pile up the spoilers.....

I'm not complaining. I think it kind of is a drag that it got pushed back but oh well. The anticipation will build up even greater and it will make all of us Trekkies wait longer for it and therefore driving us mad with the suspense. It does make a little sense marketing wise, but it will have higher competiton as was noted in a different thread. I just want to see it, I don't really care what day they pick, just as long as it isn't to far from now.

I'm pretty sure the new release date is a coincidence. I mean, even the fanboys had to do some digging to find this...

Default Not too disappointed

I'm still waiting for a confirmed UK/Ireland release date. It was originally going to be 26th December here (a whole 24 hours after the US release), probably due to the fact the the cinemas would not be open on Christmas day.

That said, I think the delay will be a good thing for the movie. I remember reading an article back at the beginning of the writers strike where J.J. stated that the strike would seriously affect the movie as he could not make any script changes 'on-the-fly'.

All good directors work with their screenwriters throughout principal photography and lines of dialog are regularly changed, scenes are altered and new ones are written. This was not possible during the filming of scenes while the WGA were on strike.
Essentially, anything that was filmed during the strike period had to be put on film using exactly the dialog that was written on the page; not a single word could be changed, dropped or added. This seriously ties the hands of the director, as he could have a creative brainwave and can't do anything about it.

The delay will give the whole creative team the chance to go back and revisit some already committed scenes and make the appropriate changes; this can only be for the benefit of the final movie. Any ideas that were conceived over the last three months can now be incorporated into the script.

I know the extra 20 weeks will seem like an eternity, but I am sure it'll be worth the wait.

Too bad it doesn't release the day of first contact:
April 4 2063.

It would have been sooner...
