I don't want to say too much. All you should know is it is amazing, though I need to clarify a few things first. Lets get the few bad points out of the way. Product placement sucks. Young versions of beloved characters suck. Silly cliché animal battles suck. The rest is gold. For me, though, this Trek will find it hard sitting amongst TWOK and TUC and the better of the original cast Trek films for one reason: its not the original cast, and can never match up to the original cast.
That said, this movie is a better "movie" than any trek film before it. It simply has MORE in it. More action, more sex, more plots and sub plots, more emotion and more Kirk and Spock than you could imagine. So much happens in this movie, its ridiculous. The entire Trek universe you know will be torn apart... In a really good way.
This movie acknowledges the alternative timeline issues in a really mature manner. It has you wanting to follow the "new" timeline on a weekly basis, just like TOS. If they make a second, and it manages to pull off “as good, or better” then I will officially crown this “reboot” official Trek canon.
I can't imagine a better selection of actors to play our beloved cast either. Pine does Kirk his own way but his Kirk is badass. He throws a few nods to Shatner here and there with some patented cocky nuances. Quinto IS Spock. He looks and moves exactly like Nemoy, but the character Abrams brings to the screen has so much more depth than Nemoy was ever given. Its beautiful. Urban does Kelly to the tee. His first few lines replicate the original bones as if it were a strange mirror universe. He’s the most accurate of the lot. Zaldana is just so damn sexy it hurts. I can’t say I’m all that interested in following her silly little love sub plot with Spock but she steps up to the plate with a golden bat as Uhura.
Yelchin makes for a really great comic relief with his version of Chekov. And let me say it’s good to see a real Russian accent in Star Trek (not that he doesn’t ham it up to the max.) Not enough Scotty or Sulu for my liking, but I guess you have to sacrifice that to focus on the big ones.
The visual effects and soundtrack are fantastically epic, with a closing credits nod to TOS. Strong, emotional score from start to finish. Great work.
Anyway. I just wanted to summarize how I felt about the movie. I leave the real critiques to much more worthy Trekkers.
