I'm sure you've heard of a show called "Late Night with Conan O'Brien"; the show has a segment with a ribald and tasteless puppet named "Triumph the Insult Comic Dog", who taped one of his segments at the premiere of the fifth Star Wars movie (sorry, Episode 2 - not my fault the producers don't know how to count). Here is the video, and it is very scathing and just-plain-wrong at times. I'll add that I've never seen Star Trek cosplayers skewered to this level, and that's why this whole "Man, it's OK to like Star Wars but everybody thinks Trek fans are nerds" thing just sounds like a complete and total invention - I'm talking contrived, imaginary, head-in-the-sand, woven-out-of-whole-cloth invention.

OMG!!! But this is better http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pQj_bwMf7DM

Do you actually WANT to be mainstream? Only give a damn about what brandname you wear on your clothes or what hideous name the latest quick-fix celebrity couple have given their illegitimate lovechild? Drink useless weight-shakes and be entirely self obsessed? Botox anyone? If that's what it is to be accepted by the mainstream, forget it, I'd rather be a "nerd" any day.

Star Trek is fun, it ruminates and commentates on contemporary social and political issues (even TOS is relevant), explores the traits of humanity that are sometimes just to difficult or uncomfortable to think about when thrown straight in your face. It's exciting, it encourages discussion, it unites people, it makes us contemplate our own humanity.

Yeah, you should probably check your grasp on reality if ST is what you breathe and bleed, but it IS valid as both social commentary and entertainment. Despite the mocos/docos, most ST fans still walk among us - the "I live in my 90 year old mums basement and when I go on the bus I pretend I'm captain of the Enterprise" stigma has been generated by a small few (number wise there probably is lots of those, but percentage wise, probably not). I'm a ST fan, but not a fanatic.. a few DVDs, maybe a tshirt or two. It's one part of my life, it doesn't define it. If mainstreamers are too hyped up on their cheap slave-labor coffee to realise that we are people too, that we actually like to think occasionally, well they're the ones missing out... I can't be bothered to let their titters and comments define me. One of the ST tropes is diversity, accepting and respecting people for who they are. If that's what nerds do - I'm a nerd!

Saying that, I think you'll find a lot of people are ST fans in hiding, they just aren't brave enough to admit it:P

Football's largely a sausage fest anyways, so who'd notice.

Uh, that's not really mainstream either. That's a separate subset of freakdom.

AYE! And I wish they'd shoot more footage of the cheerleaders, and less of the guys in tights playing graba$$ with each other.
