It is confusing.

Everything OneBuck & Stef say makes sense. But here is a timeline based on all of your comments here (tell me if I missed something).

1. Pike goes to Narada, naming Kirk 1st officer, Spock Captain.
2. Spock sends Kirk in an escape pod to Delta Vega.
3. Kirk meets Scotty & Old Spock who tells him how to get under Younger Spock's skin in order to have him relieved of command.
4. Kirk returns to Enterprise w/ Scotty. Spock questions how he got back.
5. Kirk begins needling Spock. Spock cracks and attacks him.
6. Spock stops choking Kirk at some point, tells McCoy he is not for command and leaves the bridge.
7. McCoy utters his "We have no captain and no 1st officer to replace him" line.
8. Kirk says "Yeah we do" and assumes the chair.

I'm assuming Pike dies before #2. And Kirk wants to do some sort of retaliation that forces Spock to kick him off the ship.

My only problem is McCoy's line in #7 makes no sense, since Kirk was named 1st officer by Pike. If McCoy is refering to Pike & Spock (as 1st officer), then it makes sense. But it doesn't fit into the scene order listed above.

Questions

Does Captain Pike name Kirk "First Officer"? From what I understand, Kirk is not even supposed to be on the ship in the first place. And Sulu is a Liutenant, he should be next. Kirk isn't even an officer, at least according to his dossier on the homepage. Just asking.

First Officer Question

Pike takes Kirk with him off the bridge down to hangar after asking for volunteers with experience in combat (German Comment: "Sie kommen mit, Kirk, Sie gehören sowieso nicht auf das Schiff" (transl. You come along, Kirk, you don't belong on this ship anyway), to stop the drill, when Pike himself answers Neros invitation to shuttle over to Narada. On their way to Shuttle Bay (Spock's with them, arguing about something I have forgotten to quote it to the letter). Also is Sulu with them and one redshirt

Pike gives his orders, makes Kirk First Officer (means, that Kirk will be in command for this mission on and to the drilling thing ...) and leaves Spock in Command of the Enterprise "You're the Captain. ...(orders) ...".

*later*, after Kirk getting under Spocks skin, Spock leaves the bridge ... THEN McCoy makes his statement "Fantastic (ironically) now we have no Captain, and no first officer to replace him." (free fom German dubbing)

Kirk wheezes for air, after the fight, comments after a few blinks: "Yes we do ..."

McCoy about to argue "What in the hell ..."
Sulu intervenes with his thumb directed to Kirk: "Pike made him First Officer ..."

So, all is said and done, ... by the book. *nerd, nerd*

TV Spot Question

In one of the TV spots, we see what looks like Nero's drilling rig firing its energy beam at Earth behind Starfleet Academy. What happens here? I know Vulcan gets destroyed. What about Earth? I'm sure they won't turn Earth into a black hole. That would suck. So is that the climactic final battle sequence?

Yes, in fact thats heading to the final showdown. Earth will survive, but I don't really want to give it all away with my stumbling english. It's so far, far more better to watch it and be pressed into the seat, while Enterprise does this amazing Saturn thing ...

Kirk is not supposed to be on the ship, but we have seen the shot of him on the bridge, standing behind Pike who is seated in the Captain's chair, and it looks like he is working a console or something

I thought the same thing. Don't confirm for me if it's tru or not, but I always thought it would be better if Pike was just maimed in a way that put him in the wheelchair we all know. That would be a cool way of showing that even in an alternate universe, destiny can still happen! (e.g. Kirk becoming captain of the Enterprise)

That seems to tie into the theory of there being a momentum or tide in galactic events and that destiny does indeed play a hand in people's lives, despite 'minor' local disruptions. This concept appealed to me from the start and I enjoy seeing how it actually plays out in the film.
