Question Will the Timeline be damanged by Nero?

to my understanding the timeline is the same. the reason why the Alt. timeline is created is because of the narada attacking the kelvin. interesting?

When it comes to time travel it comes to pure speculation. Time travel does not exist in our really reality, according to scientists it never will.

In Star Trek´s and most SF´s realities it does. So it depends on the personal point of view of the writer/creator/director or the reader/viewer/who ever.

Here is my guess: when you go back in time, you instantly enter a new timeline and there is no way back to your original timeline, which goes on without you.

Based on this I would have to abondon most of the stories with a time travel plot. But this would be very sad for me, because I had to ignore lots of great storytelling. So I follow the ideas of the particular writer/creator and enjoy their creations.

For me it makes no sense at all to state a "I-know-this-all-better"-statement.

For Star trek this means: hey, this is storytelling, not physics.

PS: Please excuse my bad english spelling and typing. I´m used to spell and type in german.

Das kann ich wesentlich besser, denke ich...

There's 2 things wrong with this statement....

1) Time Travel does exist, we are doing it right now, yet we are traveling only in 1 direction at very close to the same speed. We don't know how to travel backwards but we do know we can change the speed at which we travel through time by reaching velocities close to the speed of light.

and 2) Some scientists say their won't be time travel whiles others very much think there will be some day, various books have been made on the subject and options include wormholes, both natural and man-made.

According to scientists awhile back, the earth was the center of the universe, and the sun revolved around us. Scientists know better than to say "never"!

But yes, it sounds like they are saying that the timeline we know will remain intact, but the new one will not change what we know.

It sounds as if they're going to have to say that Spock & the Narada didn't just travel back in time, but also to another parallel or quantum universe. If they did travel back in time in their universe, then the timeline we know couldn't continue. There's a discussion going on of it here:

http://www.startrekmovie.com/forums/showthread.php?t=6541

Either way, the alternate universe idea was created by the movie writers to

A. Give them a way to not be tied down to canon.
B. Allow an audience who has not seen Trek to have their own start.
C. Hopefully relieve the grumblings from the Trekkies who are resistant to any kind of change.
