The solution get public and private groups to coop with big and little companies, who will then work with labor groups to completely finance and build this monstrosity with only limited government involvement(government takes the role of preventing laziness and labor strikes). can anybody say "Hoover Dam"?

Trains are very much a viable way of getting around in parts of Europe, so they shouldn't be automatically written off.

However, like with most things, the viability and success of fast trains in America would depend on whether people see that they are the best way to get around. People will weigh such factors as the time spent from Go to Whoa, it's ease and convenience, the expense, the need and cost of obtaining transport at the destination, and whether a plane might still serve better for speed and expense.

These sort of details would make or break the fast train system; it works out favorably in Europe, but would depend on the realities of America.

The reality of America is that the train, "The Iron Horse" is what initially opened the American landscape to being populated. Trains were a very popular way to travel up until the end of WWII, then the economics of car ownership made the train less attractive... that was when the great "Ameriliners" began to disappear, replaced by the idea of piling the family into the car and heading down Rt. 66, to see the country at your own pace... of course then, gas was $00.30 a gallon....

Yup. If you need to get somewhere in the US, Canada or Mexico and do it in a matter of hours, then a plane is the way to go... but, if you're not in a huge hurry, and want to save some money, and bring lots of lugage with you, and NOT be hassled by taking your shoes off, or be body cavity searched, and don't particularly want to spend the travel time crammed into a seat that feel like it was designed for Billy Barty... well then, a train has some advantages.

I'm just wondering... we have plenty of members on this forum from Europe... what's your opinion of cross country, high speed rail?

Your have to choose a monorail using magnatic levitation, except of the Chinese nobody else wants to buy that technology

Your climate will thank you when you always choose the plane for traveling, whose emissions are emited directly into the stratosphere.
Due to extensive security checks on airports a high speed train often doesn't take a lot longer. However the larger the distance the bigger the time difference probably will become. For a medium distance a train will be better, for a large distance the plane still is the easiest choice.
