Default Let's talk about Ben Sisko

* What do you think about his role as the Emissary?
* Was he better with hair or without??
* Did you like Avery Brooks' acting?
* Was he good in the "main" role on DS9??
* What do you think of The Sis-ko in general?

hmm... I think this ought to be interesting.

1. I liked the emissary storyline. Even before the dominion arc took root, it gave this show so much continuity.
2. Without.
3. Most of the time. I know a lot of people think he was too over the top. Only on one or two occasions does is bother me.
4. Yes. He is my favorite Trek captain--a mix of intellect and passion.
5. The Sis-ko is good.

It's all about the benjamins.
It was great that DS9 dared to make its captain a god. Brooks looked better without hair and while his acting felt a bit mediocre in the beginning, he became much better over time.
I found the four other captains more interesting, but Sisko fitted well into DS9.

Without hair. Definitely without hair.

I missed the shades. He needed the shades.

...He did look better once he thinned out his beard, too!!
~I think it might have been Explorers he started to change his look wasn't it?? (ie the one with the light ship and JERUSALEM. (sorry couldn't resist.)

Well - someone can correct me if I'm wrong on that point I guess.

1. - Wasn't TOO keen on the Emissary idea, although it seemed to fit together season 5 onwards.

2. - my own opinion is without Hair and the goatee, he seemed so much cooler, I'm not too sure why though

3. - at first, his acting annoyed me, he seemd to have a breathing fit whenever he got angry, then I realised he was personalising the character; Brooks was ADDING to the scripted character, making him REAL.

4. - He was GREAT as a predominant figure of DS9, He was great at what he was good at, and was plain damn awful at what he was bad at, you know?

5. - LEGEND

My opinion:
1. His role as the Emissary made more sense and produced better episodes later in the run of the show, I'd agree with Joshbrown that S5 onwards made better use of that plot aspect.
2. Without, looked so much more like he meant business.
3. Was sometimes a bit bland but when he acted well it really showed, some of his performances were on a par, if not better than some of Patrick Stewart's best moments.
4. He was good, but he didn't carry the show, the entire cast made the show shine, everyone has their moment.
5. Pretty ace, not my favourite Captain, but then I couldn't say who is, it's like trying to choose a favourite child.

It's the most intresting role in Trek. he really brought something bold, and powerful. His acting was markedly over the top but like Kirk it found a home in Trek. I think he could have been stronger if you can imagine but his role as emissary really was strong enough. When he stopped Bajor from joining the Federation I though he was out of his mind...but it's stuff like this that worked for...and his over the top acting.

I think the minority Captains brought somehting special. Janeway and Sisko were very unquie and intresting...They should have gone Hispanic and female of Enterprise....Hot Latin boy friend punching latina before they ever go Gay role or Gay major actor. I think that will come in time but If you really want people behind a series don't choose controversy, But Hispanics are a rapidly rising group and occupy a significant part of the nations on Earth The syndiction would be off the charts.

1. I liked the Emissary storyline as long as it had a political level, religious society vs. secularization, how do you treat religion when it interferes with politics. Conflicts between a very secularized Federation and the Bajoran culture.
The moment it became just like a fantasy storyline, the good emissary vs. the evil demon, I personally think the quality declined a little.

2. without hair

3. Sometimes his spoken words are ... a .. little .. too ... overacted. But most of the time I liked his performances.

4 + 5. He was an interesting character. His behaviour as father, captain and lover was very well written, very realistic. You always believed him. Sometimes you almost believed Brooks really was Lofton's father. And his character had some kind of natural authority, the perfect leader everyone follows without questioning, though he was a different kind of Captain than Picard and Kirk were.

1 - Once the Emissary role really came into play in the later seasons it was much more satisfying. It was key to many of the overall DS9 stories and it all linked together in a very satisfying way.

2 - Without

3 - I think he got better as the series gave him meatier stuff to do and say.

4 - Yes, he seemed to work as the commander of the station. He kept our interest.

5 - A man who could make the big decisions. But was also a father. We got to see all sides of him - as the father to Jake, as a son (with his own dad lecturing him at times), as a widower learning to move on, as the Emissary to the Bajoran people, and as a Starfleet officer playing a major role in a major war. He had much more to explore than the captains who came before and later and he played it very well.
