The original phaser was not fabricated from waste and refuse. It was an example of imaginative engineering for its time. Even for today, a weapon with interchangable parts that can be broken down to a smaller functioning version- I think that's brilliant in any time or timeline. It is very functional and it makes sense. The new phaser - and someone had said this a while ago too - looks as though it was from a 1950s B-rate Sci-fi flick i.e. it stinks to the high heavens! I L-O-V-E the TOS phaser, it's my favorite toy in my arsenal (second only to my son). Look, these props are so iconic and so recognizable to most of the sci-fi community that I think the original landing party kit defined futuristic equipment for a whole generation. The new phaser shouldn't even be called a phaser except as an insult to the original phasers. It looks like a generic "ray gun" that has nothing in common with the original. Then again, I've always been "phaser-happy" from age 5 forward, never lost it. I've got 3 bloody MR models for G-d's sake! What normal person does that?? <cooling down now>

The communicator- I just don't understand what they were trying to do and I'm hoping there's some explanation for this in the movie.

Tricorder- not my favorite prop anyway so I'm not too pissed with the new one.

SUMMARY: The new ones can kiss my a$$ !!!

the communicator looking like an old flip cell phone? we are beyond that today, why would we go back in time in the future with a flip phone look alike? at least make it look like the latest tech we have rather then yesterdays 20 dollar track phone.

I think if there had of been a Star Trek XI with NO alternate timeline, the ship would have looked exactly like it does in our movie. It is a great look. the writers said that many things weren't changed from if it had been a non alt universe. This ship is what I would have expected in a new movie anyway!!!!

I haven't paid as much attention to this phaser, I have one ordered, but I like the looks of it. I do LOVE the TOS phaser, but I also loved the phaser from TWOK too.

I don't know that I can judge this from the toys, but I would expect convincing props to look robust like real military hardware, which can take a lot of use and abuse in the field.

Irregardless of how realistic the new props are, they won't stop me from seeing the movie, nor will the whole alternate timeline thing. None of the design changes are worth skipping this film. It will be amazing!

I just had the BEST mental scene playing out in my head, wherein Kirk has to take a card and add minutes to his communicator before he can use it.
