I'm happy that the Captain was rescued. But I'm not going to celebrate that three other men got killed.

Do any of you guys get Current TV? Their show Vangaurd has been running a documentary on the pirates of Somolia... the people are so poor there, that the gangs that run the country recruit guys who are desperate to feed their families to be pirates... if the recruits get killed, at least the gang leaders know there are always more desperate people to blackmail into it...

Sorry, I'm not a bleeding heart. Those same pirates have been building multi-million dollar mansions on the Somali coast on the money they took from stealing, kidnapping, and terrorizing honest hardworking sailors trying to make a living. I feel no pity for them whatsover. Go Navy! And keep going until the need for it is gone. I raise my glass to every man who did their duty.

There is no disagreement with you and Fan that in organized crime, the bosses as well as the weapons dealers who provide the pirates with the respective equipment get the large shares of the profits.
But Somalia is a very poor country, that's why people who cannnot or only barely survive join theft organizations. Killing them (when it is unnecessary and one could have arrested them instead) is a crime itself and does not deter other poor people from working in piracy (even in rich countries, the death penalty has virtually no disincentive effect).

The underlying problem is the lack of economic perspective for the Somalian people and the lack of a decent government which can battle crime. So if we wanna solve the cause and not merely deal with the effects like piracy, we should help Somalia.

If they had oil, we'd already be there. I just keep seeing that poor soldier's naked body being dragged through the streets and my teeth start to grind. I don't care how put-down people are, you don't drag naked dead bodies around in the streets. Or at least, you shouldn't.
