Did the STNG crew ever leave, drop or lose any equipment anywhere? Did they ever stash anything? You never know, It's just speculation on my part, but could part of Nero's plan be to dump young kirk in a future timeline on some planet that the Enterprise D just happened to leave some spare equipment on?

Picard and Data were on a Klingon Bird of Prey to get to Romulus, not the Enterprise.

The Enterprise wasn't there in orbit of Romulus. It stayed behind to investigate the wreckage of the Vulcan freighter T'Pau. The Enterprise couldn't have beamed down any supplies. It was still on the other side of the Neutral Zone.

It's not likely to be as random a reference as that. It's either an in-joke we're not meant to see so closely (that means nothing in terms of the story itself) or something in the film I think.

It's an easter egg, a nod to the previous Star Trek show. Just like the 1701-D hatch in Ron Moore's BSG holds no Trek BSG crossover meaning.
