You know, there is some precedence for ocean going vessels in Sci-Fi films. "Star Trek IV, The Voyage Home" had a couple of them. An aircraft carrier also featured prominently in the time travel movie "The Final Countdown" as well. There were very accurate animated world war 2 era Battleships in "The Iron Giant", and i don't know about the film, but a pre-dreadnought battleship named "Thunderchild" saved a ship full of refugees in H.G. Wells novel "The War Of The Worlds".

You know, I watched Star Blazers as a kid. It wasn't until college that I found the original uncut Space Battleship Yamato episodes. Now, I can't go back.
