Of course not!
I doubt they're "stepping the character down"....rather I'm hoping they are laying the foundation for making the character as important as he was in the show.

Most of the early reviews say Urban knocks the role out of the park. Yes, he's not as prominent as Kirk or Spock in this FIRST film, but he remains integral to the story.

Oddly, I had faith in Urban. I just watched the little clip on the shuttle and he does totally nail the McCoy personality. I just hope that the movie makers use this movie to lay the groundwork for the very real "holy trinity" that is Kirk-Spock-McCoy.
