Since they're making two more movies (planned), map the sequels around a definite trilogy (drawn from whatever story elements remain available after this first film) and let's really move the hell away from episodic. And by trilogy I don't mean like how Star Treks II-IV were. I mean like The Bourne films, The Matrix, Star Wars... etc. By the end of the second film, there should be this strong sense that everything we've seen so far is "all about" what's going to happen in the third film.

Agreed. I do get the impression that the focus of this first film really is to reintroduce and give the origins of the Enterprise crew. Obviously it needs a villain as well, but the origin is the bigger part.
So, once the first film has all that set up, it could free them for a sequel that can pretty much go anywhere.

I voted for interaction with the TNG era, but I definitely like the comparison to Bourne and Star Wars. That could be epic.
