This, to me, is one of the worst ideas ever. Both the original film and the Carpenter film have their merits, but a prequel of a sequel, just to show more heads growing spider legs and people saying "You gotta be $%^%$#@ kidding!" in Norweigan? I don't think so.

It's that or an outright remake of the 1982 one. Either way, it amounts to the same story.

ok i grew up on carpenters thing. it may have been grotesque but the scenes are ones that will stick with me for life.and pretty much deveoloped me into the scifi freak that i am.
im looking forward to this movie (IF) when its put out...

I have to say, I think Carpenters 'Thing' is better than the first. A guy in a suit vs an (admittedly improbable but psychologically more disturbing) extremely adaptable organism that can hide anywhere it wants to, and you can never know which it might be.
Plus the ending to Carpenters is so good - one of them has to be the creature, it's possible to guess which one, but you can't be sure!! We'll just 'see what happens'. Great stuff!

I just bought the game that continues the Carpenter story after that great ending you mentioned. I prefer the remake to the original as well. The spreading of "The Thing" was also very similar to Borg assimilation.
