Spock's behavior would really have to be out of the norm even for a vulcan.
What if the romulan issue in this movie becomes a problem. What if Spock is trying to keep the secret of the Romulan Vulcan connection a secret in light of this new attack?

One speculation I heard was that Kirk was forbidden to go down to the ice planet (possibly by young Spock as acting captain), but defied orders and went ahead anyway by taking an escape pod down...

I believe Kirk's on the ice planet to rescue someone. Pike, Spock or ....

This is where he meets old Spock. So maybe Kirk has received a message from old Spock... come alone.

The "ice planet" is Delta Vega, which is not an ice planet, but has ice caps.
