Two or three years from no script to released movie sounds like Warp Nine to me. Of course you can always rush, release a bad product, oversaturate the market ... but you don't jump out of the window just because you can do it.

They have the cast, sets, costumes and props... so it should need less time than this movie.

I think it's as much about much work everyone has already lined up as the amount of time it'll take to do the movie.
JJ is busy (MI and some other stuff), Pine has at least one, possibly 2 other movies, Cho's been signed up for a whole series of Flash Forward, ZQ has Heroes and has said he wants to do some live theatre and apparently Paramount has a few blockbusters already lined up for a mid 2011 release. I'm disappointed but not surprised and I agree with horatio - If I have to chose I'd rather have it done well than quickly. I'd prefer both though.

I agree. A well thought out and well executed movie is much better than a quick piece of rubbish. And they do have to work around everyone's schedules.

Especially for a film that has so many special effects. I suspect the actual filming with actors will only be a few months.
