Me, having the brain that I have, I can't enjoy an episode with flaws in it like that. I mean, take out those sequences and it's an enjoyable episode for sure. OCD, ADHD, whatever...

Yeah, the actors hadn't quite found the characters yet. I'd say that just by the end of the season (The Neutral Zone) things were shaping up nicely.

Agreed. The stories were never all that bad, but everything had a hokey kinda vibe. Everything would get better with TNG as the years wore on (that is until the last couple seasons where you tell the writers were tired of writing).

I kinda liked the Bynars episode. It wasn't that bad, although I agree TNG seasons 1+2 were somewhat sub-par overall. The Bynars were also mentioned on ENT!

I've never actually seen this episode. I was rather young when the series started, and since then I've consistently missed every re-run. Well, at least there's something to watch out for next time...

The early seasons of Next Gen are remarkably dated by today's standards - the computer science, especially. The ship's computer taking literally hours to search for a few thousand pieces of information, or Data's positronic brain having a capacity of 88 petabytes, about 11(?) times the size of all of Google's servers. Both of these details, and many more, were later updated in grotesque canon violations - er, common-sense revisions - that downplayed the earlier absurdity.

The science of the shows is always going to get outdated, not much they can do about it other than going completely the other way were we say instead that it's "scientifically impossible!"

I quite liked 11001001, was an interesting idea and used the holodeck quite well compared to a lot of later episodes. As for season 1 of TNG being a bit naff, I could say the same about DS9, VGR, ENT... always takes a while for a series to find it's feet, like jla said, the actors had to take a bit of time to grow into their roles... and they certainly did it, quality series and well developed characters at its peak.
