Obviously you have to be very true to spirit of what Star Trek is and you cannot violate canon, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have some of that as well.

Why wouldn't they? It's their plot line... they created it. I see this new interview (thanks for the link!) as being consistent with what (little) they've been able to tell us all along. We're the ones who can't see the big picture, not them.
