It's sort of a cross between the TNG Federation insignia and the one first seen in TMP, but it does bear more a resemblance to that of the TNG version.

The earliest appearance of the TMP Federation insignia was on the floor of the San Francisco airtram facility Kirk arrived at the beginning of the movie. It was similar to the one in TNG and later Trek productions, but it had a circular grid over the starfield and no prominent three stars.

The moment I saw those early spy pictures featuring cadet uniforms with the arrowhead insignia, I knew right away that the individual ship insignia system had been abolished.

I concur. Once I would say is and accident but it looks like he's doing this on purpose. I'm disappointed. These are the kind of issues that make me second guess the film. Ultimately I haven't resolved if the film will be anywhere close to canon...and frankly I still doubt it. But Time will tell.
