As long as they stick to the basics of ST lore I'm not too concerned if they rewrite a little lore/history/canon if it allows for telling a good story. I'm hoping Pike is onscreen as captain throughout. Given their different leadership styles I always thought after seeing "The Menagerie" that Pike/Kirk in the Captain/Executive Officer dynamic would have been great to see in TOS. Though it would have skewed the Kirk-Spock-McCoy relationship, maybe creating a "Four Musketeers" vibe.
I'm hoping that this film tells us WHY Pike named Kirk as his successor as captain of the Enterprise. If they ignore canon and Kirk takes on the role Number One had in "The Cage", or in the "First Lieutenant" or Tactical positions, I could go with it if they make a good story of it.
