How can the young Captain Kirk be captain of the Enterprise straight out of the academy? Is he not actually the captain yet in this movie at all, or does he have to go 'rogue' (as usual) and take command of the Enterprise, or is there some kind of jump forward a few years somewhere in the film that makes him captain nearer the end of the film?

I think the movie will jump ahead a few years from his Academy days to time he takes over the Enterprise. All that can occur in less than ten years under the right circumstances.

It seems from various rumors and little bits of info we get that the movie will cover different points of Kirks life.

As Captain Christpher Pike has been cast in the film, I'd say Kirk isn't the Captain. More likely an officer or even ensign.

We don't know the exact sequence of events we'll be seeing in this movie or the time lines involved.
We might see Kirk graduating from the Academy, then hear mention of his assignment on the Farragut and his promotion to Captain of the Enterprise, hence why Captain Pike will be seen briefly.
Thus explaining Kirk and Spock's first mission together on board the Enterprise...they might even jump a few years down the road so that the entire crew as we know it can be present.

If he is just out of the Academy then he will probably be an Ensign serving on the Farragut. Although they could have Kirk and Spock serve on the Enterprise as cadets for their summer cruise before graduation, where they would meet Captain pike for the first time. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

I think enough people have hit it on the head already here. My thoughts are we will be jumping around different points in his life, up to where Kirk is assigned on the Enterprise with Pike in Command and then to the point where he earns command.

We will see Kirk's parents before he is born.
We will see Kirk and his brother Sam as small children.
We will see Kirk at Starfleet Academy.
We will see Kirk in the center seat on the Enterprise (per Chris Pine).

So we will be seeing many different times in both Kirk and Spock's lives. It is after all a time travel story, right?

And the time travel movies are the best!

And we are suppose to see Spock as a kid as well I think.
