Default Has Abrams said definitely that there won't be a sequel regardless of success?

What's the official verdict on this? Sequel or no sequel? I can imagine there being some pressure from the studio to make a sequel if box office take turns out to be ginormous. The reason I ask is because someone said something on another thread about the film not intended to be part of a trilogy. So I wondered if Abrams had said whether he would do a follow up or not.

I think they said that the movie is not done as potential trilogy-opener like other movie of the last years like "Pirates of the Carribean" or "Spiderman". But they did not exluce the possibility of further movies and some of the cast seem to have signed on potential further movies.

Yes, the actors reportedly signed on for a 3 movie deal, and Paramount have "locked down" the current creative team to do the sequel already. Though, it will largely depend on reception/success.

Star Trek is a franchise for Paramount and you can bet there will be sequels as long as they do good box office and make money.

If this reboot lives up to the high box office expectatoins you can bet a sequel will be in development quickly if not already (I believe the writers are in preliminary talks about penning a sequel).

One of the cool things about this reboot is that finally the budget of a ST film is enough to produce a product that has the possiblity of being a blockbuster with wide appeal, assuring more Star Trek will be produced.

Either Orci or Abrams said months ago that they had ideas about a second film, but all of it was being saved for future reference and a greelighting by the studio. They were busy launching FRINGE at the time, so a TREK sequel was not their top priority... but at least story concepts exist, in their heads if not on paper (or in pixels).

Several cast members have stated in interviews that they were signed to a 3x deal.

Cool

They've pretty much said it from the start that they were signed for three.
