Default Does anyone actually believe this alternate timeline business?

I see a number of posts that say it doesn't matter what the ship looks like because its an alternate time line. Or, Captain April isn't in it due to the same reason etc etc etc. Maybe I'm in the minority here, but this alternate timeline business was a completely after the fact thing to appease the hardcore fans (which is a bit insulting to me). Plain and simple. You can quote me on this, if there is a sequel (after they right the wrong in 'this timeline') stuff will be the same and look the same. The E won't go back to the 60's design. Chekov will still be on the ship. And so on. Your thoughts?

Actually, I don't care if it's an alternate timeline or not. I want a good Star Trek story.

Sure, because this timeline will continue.

Cool

The fact that it could end up an alternate timeline would explain a great many things...

Would make Orci's remarks how the story "respects canon" make sense (because by being in an alternate timeline, "real" canon is not interfered with)...

It gives Paramount free reign to do what they want into the TOS era without having to square with any material under CBS's control...

I'm a hardcore fan and it actually makes sense to me, and makes me less worried about the movie because in the end result, it will just be a "what if" story...

Thanks to I-Am-Zim in another thread, this is the interview that says it all, where Bob Orci admits the movie's events are in an alternate timeline:

Was there confusion over this? Of course it's an alternate timeline, from the moment Nero causes the split by attempting to change the past. What's not to understand about that?

The question which remains is what happens in that alternate timeline by the end of this film, and how will it relate to the parallel timeline it split from?

Btw, here's a working link to the article (there is a format error in the link above):

Default it's only my opinion but...

what you are going to see and what you are going to get after are going to be the same yet different from what has been done before.

It's over. There will be no carbon copy remake. JJ has the cash and he is doing it his way. Do I wish a bunch of stuff was different and in line with canon? Sure.

Do I hope for a good story and give thanks for what is in line with TOS? Much, much more so.
