So, my birthday is around the corner and I think I want a season of TNG. I know I won't be able to get all seven So, which season should I get? Should I start in order with number 1 or get a better one? What do you think? Which season should I get?

I always liked Season 4. I think that's the one where Picard is assimilated by the Borg. I may be wrong on that, but I do remember liking 4 quite a bit.

Season 3 is an essential:
the Defector The Drumhead Yesterday's Enterprise The Best Of Both Worlds Tin Man so many more this season really defined the series and set the bar that future spinoffs haven't been able to emulate.

...that is indeed the season in which the episodes got really good, and budgets got big enough to pull off some much more convincing and exciting episodes. Plus the writing is far better. I have always also had a soft spot for season 7 (the final one) too, but I would start with three, work you way forward from there, then go back and watch the first 2.

If you get S3, just remember you won't get "The Best of Both Worlds, Part II." That's on S4. But if you plan to follow Tosk's suggestion, that's a fine place to start.
My first thought was either S5 or S6. Gosh, there are really great episodes among Seasons 3 to 7, but S5 has "Darmok," "Unification," "Disaster," "Ethics," "The Outcast," "Cause and Effect," and "The First Duty." And S6 has "Rascals," "True-Q," "Chain of Command," "Tapestry," "Starship Mine," "Lessons," and the true Valentine to Trek fans "Relics."
