The cyclindrical device is certainly *not* a tricorder per se, it bears absolutely no resemblance to a tricorder.

I recon it's a hypospray - it looks too long to be a medical scanner.

One thing's for sure - they weren't made out of salt-shakers this time!!

Perhaps it's a medical scanner for special areas...

I'm also not shure about this "staff"
It could be everything but not a tricorder.
Maybe some sort of operation tool laying around in sickbay.

Were any engineers consulted when redesigning the Enterprise and all of these props? The 1960's series was amazingly insightful in their design. Today's cell phones look just like their communicators and bluetooth looks like Uhura's earpiece. Does the movie have anything we might see become a reality in 20 - 40 years?

The communicator IS the tricorder... (it also takes photos, can text, has GPS, will find a resteraunt on the alien planet for you, will act as a universal translator, geiger counter, interrocitor, can play games, can store up to 3k songs in MP3 format, HD camcorder, act as a LCARS terminal...) All for $128.99... with contract.

The only thing that I'm not a fan of is the "tricorder." The communicator and Uhura's earpiece look fine.
