My initial reaction was to the simplicity of design, and how different it is from the original. After reconsidering my comment, I would have to say it looks - which is no more than a comment on its general visual appearance, not materials or details - more like an older iPod (the ones with the circular navigation element on the front.) Also, there are no buttons or lights, and apparently no flip-top (at least that I see.)

If you look at this picture (http://trekmovie.com/images/st09/cesprops_group2.jpg) it looks to me like the communicator hinges at the top. Im thinking it probably does open like the tos communicator. Closed, I have to agree, it kinda does look like an ipod. As far as the "tricorder" goes, I'm gonna agree with the earlier post that this is probably the smaller scanning device attached to the tricorder, not the tricorder itself

I think it's a safe bet it does.

All of the equipment looks kind of retro to me.

I, too, agree that in this picture, you can clearly see where it's hinged to flip open - bravo, JJ! And BTW - I actually do like it, it's just that my son's touch-screen iPod looks more futuristic IMHO.

i think you can see a phaser in the trailer. kirk has one and there may be one on the cops leg, but in the pic with the closeup of the back of the leg its gone.

I think that the Com-Unit looks like an old flashlight used by the german army.
The problem which the producers have, is that the fans want to see thinks they know from TOS but our present tech looks far more futuristic than this one out of the show.
So I think they managed it pretty well and I think the used items are looking great.
The only thing I don't like is the new "old" bridge Set.
It looks more than the bridge from the "Timeship Relativity" out of Voyager

From those grainy pic's it looks like the Laser from Lost in Space.

I think the earpiece is spot on. I like the communicator. The side view shows that it narrows (gets thinner) as you move towards the top, or hinge just like the original prop did. Some gold would have been nice. The medical tricorder looks OK if not a bit large, if in fact it is the scanner device. As long as these props have good sound effects and spinney things, they will be great.

In the scene in the trailer where Spock is about to clobber Kirk, you can see a crewman behind them that looks like he is holding a phaser. It seems to have a relatively classic shape.
