Cool Shatner's "Star Trek: Academy" vs. STXI...Parallels...

One of my Christmas presents was the paperback of Shatner and the Stevenses "Star Trek: Academy - Collision Course" which is Shatner himself (whith his regular co-writers) giving the history of young Jim Kirk, his brother Sam and Kirk's entry into Starfleet...the book originally came out last year.

The story starts with 17 year old Kirk getting into trouble in San Francisco for trying to clear his girlfriend of a theft at the Academy, where she is a Midshipman, and along the way by accident meets a young Spock...

Young Kirk is still emotionally scarred from the events that happened three years before on Tarsus IV. And his father (whose name is given as George Joseph Kirk, who is a retired non-comm, not an officer) is far from pleased with the course Jim and Sam have taken with their lives.

I'm wondering, the turnaround Shatner took in his attitude toward the new movie...were their some deals made so Shatner couldn't sue over possible similarities between his book and the movie script in return for a monetary settlement and Shatner putting a happy face on?
