I think some of the ones were Trials and Tribblations, Flashback and the Enterprise Episode with the Defiant in it...amazing episodes.

Good point, Saquist.
These episodes worked in the context of a TV series, but a movie has to stand on its own feet and carefully prevent the impression of being merely a hommage. Any fan nods should be most subtle and implemented such that the movie would also work without them.

In other words, have a darn good story that keeps everyone interested instead of using cheap plot gimmicks...right?

Right, and above all, no previously used plot gimmicks. That is what some people grow tired about in the last Trek series, lack of new blood and thus lack of new ideas in the production team. Most funny when the very same people complain about superficial or minor changes

I am with you on this one...This is the soul reason I want to see this movie ...for the chance to see a new story unfold and still stand on it own with characters we all love. The same reason I enjoy Smallville on TV it does not adhere strictly to what is considered "Superman Canon" but it has strong story lines that hook you.

Yes absolutely.

Oddly enough I wasn't on board with TWOK at first...and to honest I still don't like the all battle story line but it is definitely a good film.

Good point... makes you wish there were forums like this back then so we could see what was said about that!

Excellent posts! I DO remember the concern about the action in TWOK--some saying that it was trying to combine "Aliens" and "Star Wars", but, turns out, TWOK was one of Trek's better installments, IMO.

Now...I go for that dreaded "once a year" examination. ARGGH!
