Default Picard's New Year's Party

I wasn't quite sure where to put this, so sorry if it's wrong.
But I had an interesting experience of how so called non-fans react when confronted with Star trek.
I spent my New Year's Eve at a costume party in my local pub. Originally I was planning to go in a TOS or possibly Movie Era Starfleet uniform (which is my favourite), however all that was available was a TNG uniform, which is nothing to sneeze at.
I even had a 'working' communicator badge which announced at the slightest touch 'Enterprise here, how many to beam aboard?'

What I wasn't expecting was the response from complete strangers, which ranged from a sarcastic Vulcan salute, to one woman pointing out that I only had three pips on my collar and so was Commander Riker, not Picard. To a drunken man chatting to me in the Men's room about the Star Trek XI.

Yet I wonder if asked if they watched Trek or were fans would probably deny it or claim they only watched if there was nothing 'better' on TV.

Anyway Happy New Year!

I think it is fair to say that it is Treks fans tendency to want to dress up in Star Trek uniforms that is one of the biggest reasons why Trek is seen as being for sad geeks. However it is a bit unfair to react negatively when it is worn at a fancy dress party!.

She was right about the pips though!

At work, we always have a fancy dress Christmas Draw, and one of my friends always dresses up in his Star Trek uniform. Used to be Data, now it's Riker. Everyone's used to it now. I even went as Odo one year.
