Wow, Chekov looks a lot like Bashir there... I remember some DS9 promotional pics where the good doctor's frowning in a very similar manner.

To answer the question: a widget like the new TREK version is a self-contained media file or app which users put on their web pages or community profiles which promotes (in this case) a film, offering release date info, trailer video, links to official sites and other media to viewers.

It can be as simple as a countdown clock or as complex as a mini-website, self-contained in a reasonably sized 'box' on a web page.

They have many uses at the desktop level too, including sports (there is a widget to follow NCAA basketball tournaments every March), weather, news updates, etc. Rather like RSS feeds for news, but usually they're graphically oriented and encourage interactivity of some kind if only as a portal to larger content.
