There are a lot of films that are already a "success" even before they begin filming, depending on the financing structure and semi-legal loopholes employed.

How the economy is in May will play into this movie's perceived success or failure at the box-office. I suspect that DVD sales won't be damaged much.

This Movie Will Not do bad, but will not do VERY GOOD. The Word Will Spread, And Alot Of Kids Will Get Hooked, After Seeing It On DVD. Then, the Next Movie ( There Will Be One, Trust Me) Will Top Box Office Charts. Treks Warp Core Has Already Officially Restarted!

No, inflation adjusted numbers are paid information at Box Office Mojo

Finance is an important issue. Trek to date has suffered from a lack of finance, this movie's budget is on par with most of the box office blockbuster types. You could reason that Trek will gain from this new kiddie fans who will later appreciate the depth and beauty of the franchise and Trekdom will flourish.

Else it will suffer like Babylon 5 and other good scifi stories. Lets be honest, Trekkies now will take any Trek in any form, we will b!tch about it but we will see it. Nemesis had bad timing and even Insurrection did better with a poor storyline so making 150 mil wont be a problem.

If Batman had died with Batman and Robin the movie, we would not get The Dark Knight, as long as stories are not forgotten from popular culture it will thrive and garner good stories in the future. So supporting JJ is a smart bet, even in ST11 sucks, a good box office return guarantee's support from Hollywood moguls hence a better quality sequel. If JJ does not succeed, Paramount may think that Trek is low budget and high risk. And Saint can never have that great script sold

How to know which movies will be running against Trek before and after May 9, 2009? Just to estimate the competition

I'd say between 200-350 million in the U.S. with perhaps up to 100 million more after the international and DVD figures are added. Enough to guarantee a sequel if it's made with fewer bucks than the original.

I'm guessing in the 350-500 range for US plus international box office revenues for the theatrical run. International numbers will likely outperform US domestic box office due simply to the audience numbers for such a widely-released film such as TREK. Merchandising on top of that, and beyond... I can only ask Paramount to give TREK a truly landmark DVD release, along the lines of IRON MAN's jam-packed release.

The only real competition for ST:XI is X-Men Origins: Wolverine and Terminator Salvation (T4) - neither of which opens on May 8th.

May Release schedule:

May 1st:
• The Ghosts of Girlfriends Past - New Line
• X-Men Origins: Wolverine - Fox (Could continue a second week into Treks run)

May 8th:
• Adoration - Sony Classics
• My Life In Ruins - Fox Searchlight
• Next Day Air - Summit
Star Trek - Paramount
• Wild Child - Universal

May 15th:
• Angels and Demons - Columbia
• The Brothers Bloom - Summit (NY & LA)
• Bruno - Universal
• Lorna's Silence - Sony Classics

May 22nd:
• Easy Virtue - Sony Classics
• Night At The Museum 2 - Fox
• Teminator Salvation - Warner Bros.

May 29th:
• The Brothers Bloom - Summit (Wide Release)
• Drag Me To Hell - Universal
• Up - Disney

Should be an easy month for Trek to do good! After that June has Land of The Lost, Transformers 2, July has Ice Age 3, 2012, Harry Potter 6 and August sees G.I. Joe. (just blockbusters listed) so if it finds its niche and following, it could run all summer and do well.

Yea from what i heard a couple of weeks is good enough to make a lot of money, JJ is focusing on foreign markets. Trailers in all major languages, promos etc, JJ's movies make an average of 300-350 mil which is good. I forsee no problems. But i really really wish a 600-700 mill total gross. Just to show Star Wars we can kick *** too, and we are not the poor cousin
