I hate the parallel universe excuse. That statement worries me. I have a feeling the movie will throw out, replace, or simply ignore more established Trek "history" than it respects. It may still be a good movie based on it's own merits, but fans like us will NOT be happy with the changes. I am still going to wait till AFTER I have seen the movie before judging it.

I also hate the parallel universe statement on a couple of factors, one of which is, while essentially supposed to be a "continuity" (I agree...no more use of the word canon...we're fans not monks.) saver, it, by the very definition of how it works violates continuity. Why did the Enterprise wink out of existence in "CoTEoF" when McCoy went back? By Orci's explanation...it should have still been there for them. Why would there need to be Temporal Agents to keep alterations from occuring to the timeline? Wouldn't they actually be more along the line of quantum dimensional agents to keep others out of our universe? He's basically taking a single episodes explanation of how things work, and ignoring about a dozen others that says it doesn't work that way.

Okay wait....here's how I understand it. The movie has basis in the original timeline. It has OUR SPOCK in it!
Remember, Star Trek has established that a timeline can cease to exist if it's invalid and becomes unnecessary (because it meshes with the "real" timeline). It has also established that there are some species which can sense when a timeline is invalid. Go back and watch Yesterday Enterprise if you doubt me. Of course, even if Vulcans aren't such a species, Spock being a hybrid might well have the ability himself. We've never seen him in a situation in which his past has been changed. Spock could realize that his current timeline has been altered. His research could turn up the fact that Nero went back to prevent James Kirk from being born. Going back in time, he tries to stop Nero, possibly preventing the death of Kirk's mother so causing Nero to jump to another time in which he plans to destroy the Federation by destroying Vulcan. Spock follows him. I don't see that the alternate timeline is a cheat, as long as it's done correctly. (cheap out for plot? yeah...but if it's done right, I'll probably forgive it).

I had a bit of a problem following that post....but I'm all over the idea of Guinan being in the movie (great secrecy!). That would be my preferred way for Spock to learn about the timeline change.

I'd definitely make whoopee and yeepee in the theatre and if Guinan were in it
(which sadly is very unlikely) |

Okay, after actually reading what was said by Orci I do not hate his explanation any more. All he is refering to is the time travel aspect of the movie. He did NOT say the movie will end in an alternate universe (although I find it likely). The destruction of the Kelvin by Nero was NOT part of the normal flow of time in "our" universe, somehow Spock of the future is aware of what happened (or will happen) and travels back in time (or to the correct quantum universe) in order to set things straight. I can swallow that.

Call the cops and alert the media... fiction isn't reality yet again. Oh the bitter disillusionment! ![]() We might as well add that Orci's mission is NOT to mention everything he knows to us, so accusing him of that fault is just pointless. If physicists spent their time writing great sci-fi stories, then no one would be studying quantum mechanics. I think both parties are pursuing their best destinies and don't expect the two to switch careers for good reason.
