Default Alternate Timeline! So where does that leave any sequels?

OK. So we have an alternate timeline with a revamped Enterprise and characters that have altered histories.

What happens if the movie is a success and a sequel is made?

Do we go back to the original timeline with our familiar TOS Enterprise or do we continue in the alternate timeline?

hmm...

That is now a very interesting question, but if they do that kind of reset at the end I wouldn't expect them to reveal it. But if they don't then TOS exists in it's alternate universe, so does the new series.

It is a little unsatisfying to contemplate that, but it allows both to exist independently of each other.

A sequel would go with the new established universe of Abrams, I guess.

Sure. But if our heroes succeed because of Old Spocks intervention does that not mean the timeline is reset to the way it should be? It should, or we diverge into two separate timelines?

I don't see how that is possible?

Did you read the interview?

I'm pretty sure it would continue in the parallel universe that is going to be established in this film. They could always do another TNG film and it wouldn't affect the new universe but unfortunately I don't think that will happen. I like to see TNG get a proper finish.

Maybe they'll leave it open ended and if the movie does well, stay with new universe... if it don't... next movie takes over and is about getting things back to normal? hard to say...

Well, I admit this is where my lack of a grasp of quantum mechanics disadvantages me, but old Spock comes back from the Nemesis era timeline, so what I'm unclear on is how he can skip timelines into an altered TOS one, and how does he know that it's been altered? If they're saying that 'all possibilities that can exist do exist' then Spock might merely fix one timeline from greater damage, but not reset it back, since a timeline would also exist where he failed. Which is where I get lost!!!

Nope, its not reset. Thats what we now know after the latest interview with Orci. Every alteration does only have effects on the universe altered, not on all the other universes (=timelines). You may want to check trekmovie.com and all the threads here concerning the parallel universe established by Orci and Kurtzman.
