Default Timelines?

Shall we geekily thrash out sense of these numerous timelines?

Okay, I'll begin!

So, quite obviously, if we look at our new Enterprise, we can see that it looks very advanced. And our Kelvin, whilst not quite so advanced looking, is pretty advanced compared to TOS like stuff.

Hmm... This looks like a familiar concept, where have I seen this before? Ah yes, I remember! [/lionking] This is a bit like the ENT, technology! Okay, so we know that ''First Contact'' messed with the timeline a teensy bit, so we could have a ''Butterfly Effect'' there, something happened to bring about a few technological advances there...

And something else messed with the timeline! The ''Temporal Cold War''! Maybe this is the real reason for ENT looking so different! Or maybe it just contributed, and would not have happened without the events of ''First Contact''.

And that could explain the ''Advanced'' Kelvin. And then we have Nero come and destroy our Kelvin, or something. And thus we are given our new Enterprise!

But maybe not, I am not the creator of continuity - and we all have different opinions, so what do you think? (And I know that I am being overly geeky/nerdy, but my mind overanalyses trivial matters anyway: I might as well!)

I think you'll have a lot of agreement over altered timelines but I don't normally go with any kind of alterations. We never saw any other starships in the TOS era so it there's little frame of reference to suggest the Kelvin is an anomolous design as such.

It doesn't look out of place in TOS I think, just has slightly different feel, that is all!

I think it feels consistent with TMP era, and maybe the Kelvin is from a design that came after the TOS E and before the refit E. So a lineage exists, it just was not visualised prior.

So the question is: Is the new timeline created after the destruction of the Kelvin? Or has the new timeline already been created prior because of Nero coming from the 24th Century? Also is Nero from the Prime timeline or is Nero from another alternative timeline?

Now that I caught up to the whole film being in an alternate timeline it may not make a difference anymore!!!

I think the idea behind the Kelvin was that it was launched in a time before the Enterprise... So being consistent with the TMP era doesn't fit that well...
But Hey!

Yes, but if we're in alternate universe/multiverse theory, does that still even apply? The different universe has a subtly different design ethos.
