May be they just feared to have overlooked something and all the Trekie fandom going mad over a violation of canon. Thus inventing a new name helps to evade the problem.

I think that there might be a short reference to a blonde lab technician in it, but if Carol Marcus would have appeared in the movie, she should have been an important character.
Just showing her as another conquest of Kirk wouldn't do her justice and serious scenes between her and Kirk where they discuss whether to live together, whether he should give up Starfleet or she should give up her research, anything that really explored their relationship probably does not fit into the script of Orci&Kurtzman, perhaps because it would be a "slow-down" part of the movie and their Kirk is just very eager to get up to the stars and is not as mature yet as events like Tarsus IV or the relationship with Marcus would suggest.

Well that's my fault. I didn't mean to imply that Carol was just another conquest.
I personally think she was more than that.

Maybe they recasted when they couldn't get her.

But if you're afraid you're going to screw up canon then there nothing safer than just doing something new.

I think that she would be a step into the 'serious, young Kirk who becomes more easy going once he is in space' direction (like depicting Kodos and Tarsus IV would be). It would have been nice to see something like this which does not fit into the clichée of Kirk being a cowboy and womanizer, but it also would have demanded more screen time to realize it.

According to women I've met...romance always takes more time and attention than...well.....things more "physcial"

I wanted to know more about Antonia...she sounded...ethic.
